Hurricane preparedness? 10 dumb ways to get hurt

(CBS) Hurricane preparedness is in the spotlight - and no wonder. Hurricane Irene has battered the Bahamas and seems bound for the eastern seaboard of the U.S. Officials from North Carolina to New England are scrambling to do what they can do protect people if the massive storm becomes the first major hurricane to strike the East Coast in seven years.

But whatever government officials do, there are plenty of steps individuals can protect themselves and their families. Ready.gov says it's a good idea to put together an emergency supply kit that contains non-perishable food, water, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra flashlights and batteries. In addition, the site recommends making a family emergency plan that outlines how everyone in the family will respond even if the family is separated and telephones are down.
