(CBS) HOUSTON - A woman is accused of beating her 8-year-old daughter, sending her to the hospital after the child threw away an empty mayonnaise jar.

CBS Houston reports police say Paloma Clarissa Martinez, 25, was arrested Tuesday for an Aug. 8 incident in which she allegedly abused both her son and daughter.

According to police, when Martinez's 8-year-old daughter threw away an empty jar of mayonnaise, the mother struck her more than ten times with a shoe and belt. The criminal complaint says when her son tried to stop it, she would hit him as well.

The girl told her grandmother and aunt about the beating a few days after the incident occurred. Doctors found several bruises on the girl's body. "Complainant's injuries are consistent with forceful contact with a belt," the criminal complaint states. "Complainant has clearly been abused."

Authorities say Martinez told police that she was going through some hard times and became frustrated. She admitted beating her daughter was excessive.

Martinez remained in jail as of Wednesday on a $5,000 bond.
