Woman charged after dog dies in hot car outside pet store

FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- A 19-year-old Virginia woman was arrested after her dog died from being locked inside a hot car, reports CBS affiliate WUSA.

Fairfax County police and fire crews responded to a report of a dog locked inside of a vehicle outside a PetSmart store in Falls Church, at about 12:30 p.m. on Monday.

Firefighters determined the 5-year-old puggle was in distress and entered the car. They attempted to cool the dog down but were unsuccessful.

The puggle was taken to the veterinarian's office inside the PetSmart, where it was pronounced dead.

Megan Campbell, the dog's owner, was arrested soon after and charged with felony animal cruelty.
