Hornets Sign Baron Davis

The Charlotte Hornets signed first-round draft pick Baron Davis to a contract.

In announcing the signing Monday, the club did not reveal terms of the agreement. The Hornets said 10 players now are under contract.

Davis, 20, the third overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, played point guard at UCLA and left after his sophomore season.

At 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, Davis is known as a physical, aggressive player. He bounced back from knee surgery to lead UCLA in scoring, assists and steals in 1998-99, his second and final season with the Bruins. He averaged 13.6 points and 5.1 assists in 59 games.

He played for the Hornets' summer league entry in the Atlanta Summer Shootout earlier this month, averaging 10.7 points, 4.7 assists, 1.67 steals and 35.7 minutes in three starts.

"It's great to have our first-round draft pick signed," said Bob Bass, the Hornets' executive vice president of basketball operations. "We were very excited about his play in Atlanta and look forward to seeing him at training camp in October."
