Hollywood arrives in south Florida
(CBS) Ah, the magic of movies. No longer will south Floridians have to brave long flights, pollution and L.A. traffic to see the iconic Hollywood sign. Now they can brave humidity, heat and the Florida Turnpike in their own backyards to see a replica.
CBS station CBS4 Miami reports the makers of the movie "Rock of Ages," a musical starring Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough and Alec Baldwin, will film in Florida with the Hollywood sign lookalike set up in Pompano Beach on the Monarch Hill Landfill.
The replica has letters 20 feet high, just like the real sign in L.A.'s Hollywood Hills.
"Rock of Ages" is based on a Broadway musical of the same name. Alec Baldwin has been in the news regarding the movie because he dropped out of the production briefly but has since returned.
The film is set in the late 1980s, like its stage counterpart, and features music from the period, including songs by Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Journey, Poison and Whitesnake.
