Hillary Clinton's lead over Donald Trump shrinks in new poll
Hillary Clinton's lead over Donald Trump nationally has shrunk to five percentage points, according to a USA Today/Suffolk University poll released Tuesday.
The poll found Clinton leads Trump 45 percent to 40 percent. Only two months ago, Clinton lead Trump by 11 percentage points.
If Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein are factored into the race, Clinton would lead Trump 39 percent to 35 percent. Eight percent would back Johnson and 3 percent would support Stein.
Three-quarters of people said that they are voting for Clinton because they support her, but nearly a quarter said they'll vote for her because they're voting against Trump. Forty-eight percent, meanwhile, said they are voting for Trump because they support him and 39 percent said they're voting for him because they're against Clinton.
The poll found 53 percent have an unfavorable opinion of Clinton and 60 percent have an unfavorable view of Trump. More than 90 percent of both Clinton and Trump supporters said there is no chance they'd switch to the other side, and 12 percent said they remain undecided.
On Trump's proposed Muslim ban, 41 percent said they support it and 49 percent said they oppose the plan. Among Trump voters, two-thirds support a ban.
The poll surveyed 1,000 likely voters between June 26 and 29 with a three-percentage-point margin of error.
