"Hiccup Girl" Jennifer Mee, Jailed on Murder Charge, Wants Furlough for Funeral

(CBS/AP) Jennifer Mee, the Florida girl who became famous for an unrelenting case of hiccups, hopes a judge will grant her a furlough to attend her grandmother's funeral as Mee sits in jail charged with murder.

Mee was arrested four months ago after police say she lured Shannon Griffin, 22, to a vacant house where he was robbed and shot.

On Monday, Mee's attorney John Trevena asked a judge to let her attend the funeral for Mee's maternal grandmother who died Friday. At one time, the grandmother had custody of Mee and was more like a parent.

Trevena made it clear the family would pick up the cost of security and transportation if granted the furlough. He asked the judge to allow Mee to leave the jail sometime between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday. He says Mee would go straight to the crematorium, attend a memorial service for her grandmother and come straight back to jail.

On Monday, the judge said she would not make a decision until she hears whether the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will sign off on the plan.

The judge will announce her decision Tuesday morning.

Mee and two other men are charged with first-degree murder in Shannon Griffin's death.

Mee gained national attention in 2007 with a case of the hiccups that wouldn't quit. After many months of remedies that didn't work, the condition finally went away on its own.
