Cavill's rep confirmed the engagement to People magazine on Wednesday.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that Cavill, 28, proposed to Whitaker during a trip to Hollywood.

"I couldn't believe it when he asked me to marry him," Whitaker said, according to the paper. "I thought we were there to celebrate his birthday. It was such a surprise and I am so happy."

Cavill reportedly called her father to ask permission before popping the question.

Whitaker is currently training in hopes of making the British show jumping team for the 2012 Olympics.

The new Superman film, titled "Man of Steel," is scheduled for a Dec. 2012 release. It also stars Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Jonathan and Martha Kent.
