Hawaii Coach Out Of Hospital
Hawaii football coach June Jones has been released from the hospital after sustaining serious head and internal injuries in an auto accident last month.
Jones was released Tuesday and was resting at home, according to The Queen's Medical Center.
On Feb. 22, Jones was driving alone near Honolulu International Airport when his car ran off the roadway, crossed about 200 feet of dirt and grass, and then hit a concrete pillar.
"It's inspiring that he can come out that fast," safety Jacob Espiau said. "I'll be happy when he can come out here (to spring workouts). That will be an inspiration to the whole team."
Hawaii associate coach George Lumpkin on Wednesday said Jones has a stiff neck and is "still real sore."
Lumpkin said he speaks to Jones daily, updating him on the team's progress.
The 48-year-old former NFL quarterback and head coach became an island hero two years ago when he turned down a multimillion-dollar contract to continue coaching the San Diego Chargers to take the coaching job at Hawaii in 1999. He led the school, which was 0-12 the previous year, to a 9-3 record.
The team finished 3-9 last season.
