Hartford Mayor Surrenders for 2nd Time
Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez has surrendered to Connecticut State Police for the second time this year amid a corruption investigation of city government.
Perez turned himself in at the Hartford barracks Wednesday morning. The charges against him were not immediately released, but he said Monday that there was a new arrest warrant accusing him of wrongdoing involving former Hartford state Rep. Abraham Giles.
Giles also surrendered Wednesday and was charged with attempted extortion and conspiracy.
"I am innocent of the charges against me and I will fight for the facts to come out because the truth is on my side," Perez said Monday, according to the Hartford Courant. "Let me be clear: I will not resign. I will continue to serve the people of Hartford because they elected me to a job and that job is not finished."
State investigators and a grand jury have been looking into a no-bid parking lot deal between the city and Giles. Both Perez and Giles deny any wrongdoing.
In January, Perez was charged with taking a bribe from a city contractor. That case is pending.
