Harry Smith

Harry Smith serves as a correspondent for the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather contributing a weekly segment, "Travels with Harry," that highlights the America away from the headlines. He also substitutes as anchor for the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather and CBS News' Sunday Morning. Smith plays a significant role in CBS News documentaries.

Smith had served as co-anchor of CBS This Morning since its premiere on November 30, 1987. He has covered stories all over the world, including Saudi Arabia, where he was based for a month of live broadcasts during the height of the Gulf War. He has also originated CBS THIS MORNING broadcasts from Japan, Poland, Hungary, Cuba, France, Italy, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Great Britain, Moscow and Spain and served as the co-host of CBS Sports' weekday morning coverage of the 1992 and 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France and Lillehammer, Norway.

Smith's domestic assignments have included covering the San Francisco earthquake in 1989, Hurricane Hugo, and the 1988 and 1992 Republican and Democratic National Conventions. In addition, he and Co-anchor Paula Zahn conducted exclusive interviews with the candidates of "Campaign '92." More recently, he covered the Oklahoma City bombing, the collapse of the Bosnian homeland and the devastating floods along the banks of the Mississippi River.

He joined CBS News in January 1986 as a Dallas-based reporter. He was named a correspondent in March 1987 and reported primarily for the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.

Prior to joining CBS News, Smith was a reporter and anchor for KMGH-TV, the CBS affiliate in Denver (1982-85). He was a talk show host for Denver's public television station, KRMA-TV (1981-82) and a radio host and disc jockey for KHOW and KIMN in Denver and WLW Cincinnati (1973-81).

Smith was born Aug. 21, 1951 in Lansing, Illinois. He received a B.A. degree in communications and theater from Central College in Pella, Iowa.

Smith, the youngest of eight children, is married to Andrea Joyce, an anchor and reporter for CBS Sports.
