Hacker targets Ohio school district, $80,000 missing

CBS affiliate WTRF

(CBS/AP) BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio - Officials with the Bridgeport Village School District in southeast Ohio say their bank accounts are the target of an unknown hacker, and more than $80,000 is missing.

CBS affiliate WTRF reported district officials say they received a call last week from Citizens Bank alerting them to the situation. Authorities and school district officials say the theft was not an inside job and that all evidence points to an outsider hacking in using various technology.

School officials say they're working with law enforcement and with an insurance company to get reimbursed.

According to WTRF, Ted Downing, the Superintendent of Bridgeport Schools, said he is confident they can get the money back, adding the district will "go after whoever we have to go after if we don't get the satisfaction we want, because we feel violated and nobody here did anything wrong." He continued, "We have a lot of protocols in place... so I guess you're never really safe."

WTOV-TV in in Stuebenville reports the FBI is investigating the apparent theft.
