Gunman ID'd as Sang Ho Kim in "work related" shooting near Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island; 1 dead, 1 in surgery, police say
(CBS) EAST GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Authorities are looking for a man named Sang Ho Kim who they say walked into a business near the Roosevelt Field Mall in East Garden City, N.Y. Wednesday morning and opened fire, shooting two people over an apparent business deal gone bad, killing one of them, according to police.
At a news conference, Nassau County Police Chief Steve Skrynecki said the incident took place at Savenergy, a lighting company, just after 10 a.m. The other victim is reportedly undergoing surgery. Neither victim has been identified by police.
Authorities say they are confident the suspect "is not in the immediate area" after having conducted a building-by-building search.
They say the suspect should be thought of as "very dangerous" but they do not have reason to believe he is on a "random shooting rampage."
Police believe Kim was a vendor working with the company he targeted and that the shooting was motivated by some sort of "disgruntlement" between him and the individuals he targeted. Several sources have reported Kim is 63-years-old.
The mall was placed on lockdown, but was not evacuated, reports CBS New York. Authorities say people are now allowed to leave the mall, but they are being screened as they exit. No one is being allowed in the building.
Schools in the area, including the Nassau County Community College and Hofstra University, are no longer on lockdown, police said in the news conference.
CBS New York reports the suspect is described by police as being an Asian male, 6-feet-2 inches tall, and was last seen wearing a grey or brown suit jacket and a red shirt. Authorities said he fled the scene in a white Honda Pilot with a New York license plate: FMA-3648.
