Growing brush fire on Long Island destroys homes

(CBS/AP) UPTON, N.Y. - A Large brush fire fanned by strong winds has destroyed two homes and a commercial building on eastern Long Island

Officials say more than 100 fire agencies responded to the blaze in the Ridge and Manorville area on Monday. One firefighter was hospitalized with minor burns and two were treated for smoke inhalation.

WCBS-TV reports that the situation on Long Island has showed no signs of slowing down and officials said darkness will make fighting the fire even more difficult. More than 200 homes have no power and the fire has prompted road closures and caused interruptions to LIRR trains.

"It's still an unpredictable situation. We had hoped earlier that the fire was coming under control, but it's clear now that it's still burning heavily and that this is still a dangerous and unpredictable situation," Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said at a news conference.

Residents in Riverhead were ordered to evacuate as plumes of smoke could be seen for miles.

A spokeswoman for the Suffolk County Executive's Office says the fire is contained on three sides. The eastern side has not been contained. She says the National Guard has been deployed to the area.

Brookhaven National Laboratory officials in Upton say a fire was reported on the northern portion of the massive complex. Approximately 2,000 acres were reported burning.
