Gray whale tangled in net off California coast

Whale rescue effort off Calif. coast 00:45

(CBS/AP) HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - For the second time in five days, a gray whale has been spotted tangled in fishing nets off the Southern California coast.

The Los Angeles Times reports wildlife officials are putting together a team to try to free the whale. It was spotted Thursday morning off Point Vicente in Rancho Palos Verdes, prompting the mobilization.

The Times said the young gray whale, was among a pair swimming north along the coast, and was first spotted Wednesday off the coast of Orange County. The discovery comes five days after another gray whale was found in a fishing net off Dana Point.

A rescue team from Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari and the Pacific Marine Mammal Center responded and attached two large orange buoys with flashers to the animal. But officials say rescuers were forced to leave because it was getting dark and the seas were rough.

A search for the whale will resume at dawn.

On Saturday, rescuers freed a young gray whale from tangled fishing nets after a seven-hour effort off Dana Point.
