Google pays tribute to Maurice Sendak

If the term "wild rumpus" means something to you, then take note: the late Maurice Sendak would have turned 85 years old today.

Google celebrated the beloved children's author today with an interactive Google Doodle featuring the characters of Sendak's beloved children's book "Where the Wild Things Are." 60 Minutes Overtime adds its voice to the chorus of Sendak appreciation with a look back at Morley Safer's 1973 profile of the author.

Safer went looking for Sendak in the wilds of Connecticut, and what he found was a 44-year-old bachelor at work in his lair, whistling to himself and blasting soap operas. Watch that footage in the video player below:

What do we love most about Sendak? As Safer pointed out, children's fiction is a genre that's over-populated by "the cute and saccharine," but Sendak never sugar-coated the experience of being a child.

"I remember nothing sentimental about it," Sendak said of his own childhood. "Children suffer as intensely and as keenly as adults do, and let nobody tell you different."

Maurice Sendak passed away in May 2012 at age 83.
