Google named best company to work for for fourth year
(CBS News) While a hefty paycheck is seen by many as the key to workplace happiness, Fortune magazine recently took into account factors like childcare, work-life balance and health benefits in their formulation of the 100 best companies to work for.
The magazine partnered with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America.
Based on the survey, the top five companies to work for in the U.S. are: Google, followed by North Carolina-based SAS, CHG Healthcare Services, Boston Consulting Group, and Wegmans Food Market.
Google clinched the best company crown for the fourth time -- the search engine giant offered perks ranging from 100,000 hours of free massages to access to their three newly opened wellness center and a seven-acre sports complex in 2012.
Andy Serwer, managing editor of Fortune magazine, announced the list Wednesday on "CBS This Morning," and said Google's main office complex in Silicon Valley is "almost like a college campus, with free food, benefits for pets, and electric cars."
"They get the best talent in America," Serwer said of Google, and they get them "to stay there."
Serwer added that their survey showed obvious factors including "pay and benefits" as "really important" in fostering a positive workplace but added that "extra bonuses for vacation time, benefits for same-sex partners and healthcare" are particularly important to employees as well.
