Golden Globes: Celebs packed insults for Gervais
How did Hollywood celebrities prepare for the Golden Globes Sunday night?
Nancy O'Dell of Entertainment Tonight said they came prepared with their own barbs just in case host Ricky Gervais came after them.
"The stars were ready for him," O'Dell said. "When I interviewed them on the red carpet, I asked them, I said, 'Here's your chance, here's a chance to rip Ricky,' which you'll see it tonight on 'Entertainment Tonight' tonight. They were ready to go at it if he did it to them."
Case-in-point: Madonna told Gervais off after he had introduced her to the stage and said in a sarcastic tone that she was "like a virgin."
However, Madonna -- awarded Best Original Song for "Masterpiece" from "W.E." -- retaliated on stage with, "If I'm still like a virgin, Ricky, then why don't you come over here and do something about it? I haven't kissed a girl in a few years -- on TV."
Overall, O'Dell said Gervais' hosting was a little nicer than at last year's awards; she called him "a little tamer."
In addition to Gervais, O'Dell discussed the night's biggest winners, including Octavia Spencer for "The Help," George Clooney, who was up against an actor he directed -- Ryan Gosling -- for best actor, and Meryl Streep, who was censored when she forgot her glasses.
