(CBS) Giuliana Rancic is home and recovering after undergoing a double lumpectomy as part of her breast cancer treatment, her husband, Bill Rancic, said Thursday.

"Giuliana is a trooper. She pulled through it," he said on the "Today" show of the two-hour surgery. "She's relieved to have it over with and get the cancer out. She's doing well at home and recovering - and I'm adding nurse to my resume. She's having fun with that."

The "E! News" co-host, 37, announced Monday that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, which was discovered when she had a mammogram before going through a third round of IVF treatments.

"Giuliana has had a tough year and a half. Between the IVF attempts and now with this, I wish I could carry some of the load," Rancic said. "Watching her being wheeled into the [operating room] was heartbreaking for me."

But, he added, "We're viewing this as a gift. It was caught accidentally, very, very early."

Rancic told "Today" co-anchor Ann Curry that his wife hopes to return to work next week, and will start radiation treatment soon.

"She's really viewing life a little bit differently," he said. "It's funny when you go through a situation like this, it really turns the volume down on the things that really aren't that important."
