Girl, 9, discovers remains of dismembered newborn

SOUTH LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- -- A nine-year-old girl discovered the remains of a dismembered newborn in the backyard of a home in unincorporated South Los Angeles, reports CBS LA.

The child's parents contacted authorities after she made the gruesome discovery around 10 a.m. Saturday, reports the station.

"The dog was sniffing the ball. I thought it was sniffing the ball so I was going to get the ball and I got it. I saw the legs. I just ran to my mom and told her what I saw," the child told the station.

The infant was believed to have been between one and three days old, reports the station.

Investigators said the infant was dismembered and are still searching for certain "significant portions," reports the station.

Late Saturday, authorities were asking local residents to search trash cans and yards, and also asked to speak with any recently pregnant women.

"Detectives would like to speak with any females who were recently pregnant, are no longer pregnant, and that the baby is absent," Lt. Victor Lewandowski of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said during a press conference.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
