Gingrich super PAC enters negative ad war with $6 million buy
"I'm not a partisan Republican," Romney says in a previous interview featured in the Gingrich ad. "I'm someone who is moderate. My views are progressive."
The ad, which will air throughout Florida in advance of its pivotal primary next Tuesday, focuses on Romney's embrace of a government mandate for people to buy health insurance when he was the governor of Massachusetts.
"Those who follow the path that we pursued will find it's the best path," Romney says in an old interview on NBC's "Meet the Press." "And we'll end up with a nation that's taken a mandate approach."
And in a moment the Romney campaign would rather forget, President Obama is shown praising him for the state's health plan, which served as a model for the one Obama later championed and which is now anathema to conservative primary voters. "I agree with Mitt Romney, who recently said he's proud of what he accomplished on health care," Obama is shown saying in the ad, which also displays a 2011 Wall Street Journal headline that says, "Romney: Obama's Running Mate."
Ryan Williams, a spokesman for Romney, went after the veracity of the attacks in a statement, targeting both Gingrich and the PAC for an alleged inability to "tell the truth."
"Speaker Gingrich has demonstrated that he can't tell the truth about his unprecedented ethics reprimand, his resignation in disgrace at the hands of his own party, and his work as a highly paid Washington lobbyist for Freddie Mac. It's not a surprise that his allies can't tell the truth either," Williams said.
This is the first ad buy in Florida for Winning Our Future, which spent more than $4 million in attack ads aimed at Romney in South Carolina during the 10 days before its primary Saturday.
The new ads are designed to help blunt attacks on Gingrich's record being financed by the Romney campaign and the pro-Romney super PAC, Restore our Future, which has already spent more than $4.4 million in ads in the state.
