Getting Hitched For Less

It's possible to spend thousands of dollars on a wedding, but is there a way to trim your budget without getting tacky? Stephanie AuWerter, Contributing Editor for SmartMoney.com, has some ideas to help your bottom line.

First, consider the time of year you plan to hold your wedding. Getting married in the off season can save you a bundle. "Out of all the weddings that take place over the course of a year, only 5% tape place during the month of January," says AuWerter. By planning a winter wedding, you can save as much as 50% on the location of your wedding reception because vendors aren't competing for business.

Consider the day of the week you get married, too. Weekend weddings may be traditional, but getting married on other days of the week can be much cheaper. If the majority of your guests are local, hold the wedding on a week night. Or, consider holding your ceremony during the day. "You will also save on the liquor bill because people just aren't going to drink as much as they will on a Saturday night," says AuWerter.

Also, when it comes to stocking up for that reception, consider hitting big bulk retailers like Sam's Club or Costco. You can save on many wedding items like flowers, invitations and even wedding bands. AuWerter says you could save as much as 60% over a high end jewelry store.

You can also save on your wedding cake. "Buy your dream wedding cake, but buy it in a smaller size and then buy an additional sheet cake in the same flavor to serve to the majority of your guests," says AuWerter. Because wedding cakes are cut behind the scenes, the people at your reception will never know the difference.

It's also possible to get the dress of your dreams without spending a bunch. Consider shopping designer sample sales and outlet shops. Or, find a dress with less beading. The more intricate the design, the more it will cost.
