George Reeves

George Reeves played Superman in the television series "The New Adventures Of Superman" which ran from 1952 through 1958. Reruns of the show ran for years afterwards in syndication, making Reeves the definitive Superman for the baby boom generation.

Unfortunately, Reeves was so closely associated with the role of Superman that it was difficult for him to find other work in the movies and on TV.

The actor was said to have been depressed over his stalled career, and was found dead from a gunshot wound in the head in the upstairs bedroom of his Beverly Hills home on June 16, 1959. An official inquiry concluded that the death was a suicide, but there are some who still believe he was a victim of foul play.

Ben Affleck is set to star as Reeves in the upcoming film "Hollywoodland" about the television star's mysterious death.
