(CBS) - The plot thickens in the GameStop scandal, as the video game retail chain decides to pull the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution off the shelves.

GameStop trashes OnLive coupons in PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution

According to the blog Kotaku, a company email was circulating with instructions for the recall. The move is clearly a reaction to the attention the company's ill-fated decision to keep down competitor OnLive, an online gaming service.

We reported Wednesday that GameStop employees were asked to open copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and throw away OnLive coupons.

GameStop posted this response on their Facebook wall Wednesday, "Regarding the Deus Ex OnLive Codes: GameStop's policy is that we do not promote competitive services without a formal partnership. Square Enix packed a competitor's coupon within the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution without our prior knowledge and we did pull these coupons. While the new products may be opened, we fully guarantee the condition of the discs to be new. If you find this to not be the case, please contact the store where the game was purchased and they will further assist."

Square Enix issued this statement Wednesday regarding the GameStop fiasco:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Square Enix

"As part of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's boxed offering on PC, Square Enix included a third-party coupon. GameStop was not made aware of this inclusion and Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies. Square Enix invites gamers who want to purchase the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution without additional coupons to buy the game at any one of over 4,000 GameStop stores in North America or purchase a digital download copy online from www.gamestop.com."

Fans are upset with the game company for supporting GameStop's shady tactics, but business is business. GameStop is the largest video game retail chain the country. In other words, game companies need to play nice.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was released Tuesday to high praises from critics and fans alike.

In the game, we enter the world of ex-SWAT specialist Adam Jensen. Set in a beautiful dystopian future, the game is an action-filled adventure and role-playing thriller that requires players to make decisions that will resonate throughout the game.
