"Game of Thrones" finale draws 5.4 million viewers
"Game of Thrones" finished up its third season on Sunday night, coming in just short of hitting a new record audience.
The finale -- which came one week after viewers witnessed the bloody events of the Red Wedding -- drew 5.4 million viewers during its premiere airing, just shy of the all-time high of 5.5 million the show earned a few weeks ago.
Add in repeat airings, and the episode, titled "Mhysa," totaled 6.3 million viewers for the night, up 28 percent compared to last season's finale, Deadline reports.
Also, "Thrones" has now surpassed "True Blood" as HBO's second-most-watched series of all time. Between original airings, encores, DVR, OnDemand and HBO Go, the drama's third season is averaging a gross audience of 13.6 million viewers, up 2 million from season 2. "The Sopranos" holds the top spot, with an average of 14.4 million viewers during its 2004 season.
"Thrones" was renewed for a fourth season back in April. That season is expected to be adapted from the back half of "A Storm of Swords," the lengthy third book in George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.
