Frozen corn recalled over Listeria scare
More than 9,000 cases of frozen corn produced by Bonduelle USA Inc. is being recalled due to concerns of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.
The Brockport, New York-based company says it has not received any complaints relating to these products and is not aware of any associated illnesses.
A Listeria infection can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. While healthy people may experience relatively mild symptoms, young children, older adults and others with a weakened immune systems are at higher risk for complications.
The affected corn was distributed in the following states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana.
It was distributed in poly bags under the brand names Wylwood Super Sweet Whole Kernel Corn, Market Basket Cut Corn, Bountiful Harvest Whole Kernel Cut Corn and West Creek Frozen Vegetables. A full list of the recalled products' labels and codes is available on the FDA's website.
The recall was the result of a product test by the state of Tennessee, in came back positive for Listeria. The company has stopped distributing the corn and is working with the FDA to investigate the source of contamination.
Consumers are urged to throw away any of the recalled products that they purchased.
