From the archives: Spielberg...and his mom
Director Steven Spielberg made his second appearance on 60 Minutes this week. First profiled on the broadcast more than 20 years ago (see above), he is still exciting audiences with his mega-hit motion pictures. But let's talk about what really interests us: his mom.
The always effervescent Leah Adler spoke candidly on 60 Minutes back in October, explaining how her divorce with Steven's father affected Steven and helped shape the parental figures in his movies. When we first met Ms. Adler way back in 1992, she told Ed Bradley how she drove a young "harebrained" Steven into the desert to make his first movie.
After meeting Ms. Adler in two 60 Minutes stories, what's clear to us is that Spielberg inherited his creative sensibility and zest for life from his mother, who at 93 still owns and operates a popular kosher restaurant in Los Angeles called the Milky Way. If you decide to stop in, you'll find the walls of her restaurant plastered with posters from Steven's movies, which add up to 27 films.
