Fraser Learns the 'Measures' of Fatherhood

In a varied film career that has included action, drama and comedy, Brendan Fraser's movies have taken in more than $2 billion worldwide.

Friday, he's back in theaters starring in the true story of a man battling the odds in hopes of saving his children, in "Extraordinary Measures."

Fraser plays John Crawley, who has two children who have a rare form of muscular dystrophy called Pompe disease, and he decides to take matters in his own hands.

"He sets off on his own to galvanize a team to find an enzyme replacement treatment. One doesn't exist," Fraser explained to "Early Show" co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez. "This is a true story of a man's effort to save his children's lives. He left the safety of his corporate job, health insurance and, in the world of our film, he meets Dr. Robert Stonehill, played by Harrison Ford, who's an irracible renagade. No one wants to work with him. His science is light years ahead of everyone else's."

Aileen and John Crowley and their children, Megan and Patrick, whom the movie is based on, were on the set during filming.

"It's quite a remarkable story. John's one of the most principled individuals that I've ever met. And to have the opportunity to play a person (like that) who lives and walks the earth is an honor," Fraser said.

Working alongside Ford, whom Fraser looked up to as a kid, was yet another honor the well-rounded actor embraced.

"I have 5-year-old now who is 'Star Wars' savvy and it takes me back," he said.

"So, did the image in your head and the expectation live up to the reality of working with Harrison Ford?" Rodriguez asked.

"I think, once I got over the hero worship -- well, actually, I have to say I honestly still haven't," he admitted. "He's a great guy. Very particularly funny. He has a sharp wit."

As a father of three boys, ages 7, 5, and 3, Fraser doesn't think they realize just yet that their dad's a big movie star, even though they've seen some of his films. "Well," he said, "they've seen Dad smash into trees wearing funny underpants!" referring to his role in "George of the Jungle."

Having a dad who plays "George of the Jungle," is one of the coolest things for a child. "Well, he was cool. I wasn't wearing that much clothing at the time. It's nice now to be recognized dressed!" Fraser said.

"Extraordinary Measures" is the first feature from CBS Films.
