Florida boy, 13, allegedly stole car with baby inside

MIAMI, Fla. - A 13-year-old Florida boy is accused of stealing a car with a baby inside, reports CBS Miami.

The boy only drove for a few minutes before coming to a stop and surrendering. He was arrested at the scene and charged with grand theft auto.

The child's mother, who declined to be named, told the station she was outside a Miami apartment complex on Friday when she saw someone jump into her black Jeep Cherokee and take off. The woman, 28, says she was just feet away speaking to her own mother when the incident took place.

She told CBS Miami she had left her car running with the air conditioner on so her six-month-old son stayed cool while sleeping in the backseat.

"I chased the car as far as I could to know which direction it was heading," she said. "I stopped the first car that I seen and explained to them what was going on and thank God the guy called 911 for me."

Miami Police Officer Kenia Fallat says the woman was able to provide authorities with enough information so that they were able to successfully track down the stolen vehicle.

It only took minutes before the Jee was found stopped about a mile from where it was stolen.

The baby was safe inside.

The mother told CBS Miami she was happy and relieved to see her son but was angry to find out that a 13-year-old boy was responsible.

"I'm really pissed off because at his age that's not really what he should be thinking about. He should be worrying about school, an education. Not stealing cars cause there's no future in that," she said.
