NEW YORK (CBS/AP) First lady Michelle Obama continued to show off her credible fashion sense by choosing to wear a red Alexander McQueen gown for the State Dinner in honor of China's President Hu Jintao.

The gown, from McQueen's 2011 resort collection, features an asymmetrical neckline and a petal-print silk organza fabric. She paired the look with teardrop earrings and wore a narrow wrap around her arms as she posed for photos in front of the White House.

McQueen, who committed suicide in February 2010, was widely respected in the fashion industry for his provocative collections and over-the-top fashion shows. This dress was designed by his protege and now the label's creative director, Sarah Burton.

Fashion was further represented at the black-tie affair Wednesday with American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and designer Vera Wang among those on the guest list.

Also in attendance: singer Barbra Streisand and husband, actor James Brolin, action star Jackie Chan, former U.S. secretary of state Madeleine Albright, Olympic ice skater Michelle Kwan, Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and jazz musician Herbie Hancock.
