Here's something I've experienced firsthand: Some Web site copies your original work and passes it off as their own. Unfortunately, unless someone brings it to your attention, it's almost impossible to uncover this kind of plagiarism. Enter Copyscape, a free service that searches for copies of any Web page.

All you do is paste a URL into the search field and click Go. Copyscape scans for, well, copies and provides the links of any it finds. The service also offers warning banners and buttons you can paste on your site to ward off potential plagiarists.

Want ongoing protection? The company's Copysentry service provides active monitoring of your site and alerts you of any infringements. The Standard package costs $4.95 monthly for up to 10 pages, checked weekly, while Copysentry Professional provides daily checks for $19.95 monthly (though still only for 10 pages).
