"Field of money" found on Ohio highway median, say police
(CBS/WBNS/AP) DELAWARE, Ohio - If you've misplaced several thousands of dollars in cash, a police department in Ohio would like to hear from you.
Police in the city of Delaware, north of Columbus, are trying to figure out how a "field of money" ended up along a highway.
Police Chief Russ Martin says there were so many bills in the median of U.S. Route 23 on Monday that an officer said it looked as though the field was growing money.
Authorities had been alerted by a motorist, and officers spent hours collecting the cash. Martin won't reveal the total.
"I can't share with you the grand total," Martin told CBS affiliate WBNS. "We'd like to leave that a secret now, but I can tell you it was five figures."
He told the station that police checked with the FBI, an armored car company and bank couriers. None reported missing any money.
Police did not release any addition details about the money, including the exact location where it was found. They are hopeful that the rightful owner of the cash can help provide those details.
The chief is confident officers rounded up all the bills, so he says drivers shouldn't stop in hopes of finding treasure.
