Fergie sees the world through new eyes ever since the birth of her son, Axl Jack, in August. The first-time parent has been navigating motherhood, and along the way decided to get involved with Unilever Project Sunlight – a campaign to help people live sustainably.

Launched Nov. 20 on Universal Children’s Day, the initiative aims to help 2 million children by providing school meals through the World Food Programme and clean, safe drinking water through Save the Children.

“I really thought about I want to do this, I want to be involved in this because of Axl. When I look into my child's eyes, I want to help children,” Fergie, 38, told CBSNews.com. “It’s heartwarming everything that’s happening.”

Fergie said she now realizes how much people are inspired by their children. “They make us want to be better, do better and make the world a better place.”

The Black Eyed Peas singer said she personally tries to live a sustainable life: “Our vineyard -- up north -- my dad  -- we built this water filter system so that everything goes back into the Earth...It’s all a cycle and there are no chemicals.   I buy organic vegetables from local farmers, recycle obviously. I drive a hybrid. I sold my old car because it sucked up to much gas and donated it all to charity to live greener. The more and more that I see what’s going on in the world, the more I want to do and the more my child will want to do.”

Parenthood has been keeping Fergie and her husband, 41-year-old actor Josh Duhamel, quite busy these days. And Fergie says it’s actually made their marriage even stronger. “No relationship is perfect but we try to communicate and we like each other,” she said.

In her down time, Fergie’s been working on the follow-up to her debut solo album, 2006’s “The Dutchess,” which featured the hits “Glamorous,” "Fergalicious" and “Clumsy.” It’s still a work in progress, but Fergie says, "I will tell you that there’s no rush at all, but when I do come with it, I’ll be really proud of what I’m coming with.”

And don’t be surprised if you see Fergie out with the Black Eyed Peas in the future. The group went on hiatus in 2011, and although there are no plans to make another album at this time, Fergie insists they definitely haven’t broken up.
