As the Fed kicks off its regular policy meeting, most Americans can barely remember the role of the central bank. I spoke to CBS television stations this morning about what the Fed does, its current policies and most importantly, the winners and losers of those policies.

While I am always extolling the virtues of maintaining a six-month emergency reserve fund, it was startling to learn that only 24 percent of Americans have a six-month emergency savings cushion and another 24 percent have no emergency savings whatsoever, according to a national survey that was conducted by Bankrate.com. This recession has really done a number on the American nest egg!
