FBI looking into reports of White House hack
The FBI is looking into reports of a hack of a White House staffer’s computer that purportedly led to a leak of sensitive information – including first lady Michelle Obama’s passport.
But they’re not confirming that a hack took place.
DC Leaks, which recently garnered attention for posting hacked emails from former secretary of state Colin Powell, said that they hacked into a young White House staffer’s email to gain access to the information. The emails are from July 2015, when the staffer was still in college, through July 2016.
“The leaked files show the security level of our government,” DC Leaks said in an email, according to The Daily Mail. “If terrorists hack emails of White House Office staff and get such sensitive information we will see the fall of our country.”
In addition to the first lady’s passport, other emails include detailed schedules for Secret Service agents, Vice President Joe Biden, and Obama herself. One email discussing a Biden trip even reveals how many steps he would be expected to climb during a June trip to a Cleveland hotel.
Another email includes the number of steps Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton would face during an event in Houston, as well as information on who she was due to meet.
“There are also detailed documents detailing the movements for Clinton and those with her on a number of campaign events, from who will be riding in which car and their phone numbers to the manifest on her private plane as it travels around the country,” The Daily Mail reports.
