Faith Hill A 'Mississippi Girl'
"Fireflies" is Faith Hill's first album in nearly three years and it debuted at No. 1 on both the country and pop charts.
The four-time Grammy-winner, who has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, released "Fireflies" on Aug. 2. The album includes her autobiographical hit, "Mississippi Girl."
Thursday on The Early Show, she performed the song, as well as her No.1 single from 1999, "Breathe," and "The Lucky One."
"Mississippi Girl" became Hill's 14th Top 5 single. It was the highest chart debut of her career. The song is about growing up in Star, Miss., and talks about how Hill is the same person, even though she's now enjoying fame and fortune.
"I'm a Mississippi girl, born and raised and proud of it," Hill told co-anchor Harry Smith. "My mom and dad still live there, along with my oldest brother and his family. And I'm a simple girl that just happens to have a career and a proud mom of three beautiful daughters."
Many people grow up singing in church, but Hill says she never expected to achieve the success she has now.
"I had big, big, big dreams of doing lots of things and going lots of places. But it's just ten-fold and then ten-fold again and again and again," she said. "It's just been an incredible experience, an amazing opportunity that we've all been able to be a part of. And it's just fun."
Hill said being married to Country star Tim McGraw poses some challenges such as deciding who does what songs.
"We have a conversation every so often," she said with a big smile. "It's great to live with a guy who I love so much, first of all, but is my best friend. And, also, that we get to experience those moments. When you find a great song, it's really exciting because it's, like, wow I get to go in and cut it. It's good to have that experience together."
McGraw sings backup on Hill's new song "Like We Never Loved At All." Co-produced by Hill, "Fireflies" was two years in the making. Three of its songs were written by a stay-at-home mom of five kids, Lori McKenna.
Asked what it has been like for her considering the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, Hill said, "It has been heart wrenching for this entire country and the entire world to see what has happened down there. But I'll tell you, strong people down there.
"The spirit of the people the state of Mississippi and Louisiana is pretty extraordinary. And it's a lesson for all of us. I went through so many stages: All of us were just like, wow, cannot believe this has happened, to anger, to frustration, to going down there and seeing the people. And you're just like, OK, we've got to pull it together and get through this. All they want to do is get going again. We just all have to remember it's going to take a long time and they're going to need our help for a long time. "
