Ex-Blink-182 Guitarist Goes Visual
Most musicians focus on what their fans are hearing. But Angels and Airwaves' leader Tom Delonge is also concerned about what they're seeing.
The former Blink-182 singer-guitarist is experimenting with film as a way to reach his audience.
"We knew from the beginning if we were going to communicate the emotional content of this record, there had to be a visual medium," Delonge said.
Angels and Airwaves is appearing in a series of short films with a sci-fi feel — one for every song on the group's debut album, "We Don't Have To Whisper."
The first two shorts, for the songs "The Adventure" and "It Hurts," are available on the band's Web site.
In addition, Angels And Airwaves is working on a CGI-based feature film with a World War II theme which Delonge said will serve as a "big metaphor for what the band is all about."
"The plot has to do with finding love in the middle of the war, which is once again a metaphor for how people go along in their daily lives," said Delonge.
"Whether it's at their job, or their family, whatever — everyone feels that they're stuck in some kind of struggle," he continued. "The idea is how to find your way out of it"
The band will be working on the project for the next year and a half. A trailer for the film is available on their web site.
After the members of Blink-182 parted ways, Delonge said he became "extremely depressed" and wanted to write about his experiences. He did just that, but expressed his personal feelings through the bigger metaphors of love and war — which in turn made his private pain into what he hopes is public inspiration.
"I'm trying to inspire people … to think that if they change their own view of the world, not only will they change the world for themselves — they'll change it for everyone else as well," he said.
