NY environmental officer frees deer with head stuck in light fixture

CENTEREACH, N.Y. -- A New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officer saved a deer on Long Island after the animal got its head stuck in a globe from a lamppost, CBS New York reported.

Around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, Officer Jeff Hull was called to Centereach after a report that the deer had gotten its head stuck in the light globe and had been lying in the woods since the night before, the department said in a news release.

Hull found the deer lying about 20 yards from the road in a housing development. He came up to the deer, but at first, the wet globe slipped out of his hands and the deer ran away, the department said.

The deer then crashed into a downed tree and fell down, the department said.

Hull approached the deer a second time and flung his coat over the globe, bear-hugging it with both arms as the deer struggled and kicked to break free, the department said. The deer finally slipped its head out of the globe and ran off into the woods.

Hull suffered a few bruises in the effort but was left with a good story to tell, the department said.
