DA: Boy, 5, died after parents gave him oxycontin
ENDICOTT, N. Y. -- Prosecutors say a 5-year-old boy died in New York state after the child's parents gave him the painkiller oxycontin.
Charles Burks, 45, and Jennifer Burks, 40, were arraigned on charges of second-degree manslaughter Thursday in Village of Endicott Court and pleaded not guilty, reports CBS affiliate WBNG.
"It was very long investigation," Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell told the station as he announced the charges.
According to WBNG, the child died May 7 at the couple's home in Endicott, near New York's border with Pennsylvania. Prosecutors say the child overdosed after the couple gave him the drug, and accuse them of recklessly causing the boy's death.
The parents then allegedly left the state and lived for several months at a campsite in North Carolina. Warrants were issued, and they were reportedly arrested after voluntarily returning to New York Thursday.
The case is scheduled to go before a grand jury next week.
