Elizabeth Warren to announce Senate bid Wednesday

Democrat Elizabeth Warren will officially announce her candidacy for the Massachusetts Senate on Wednesday, her spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

Warren, a professor at Harvard Law School, will run against Scott Brown, a Tea Party Republican who won the seat in a 2010 special election.

According to the Associated Press, Warren will spend the day on Wednesday greeting voters across the state.

"The pressures on middle-class families are worse than ever, but it is the big corporations that get their way in Washington," Warren said in a Tuesday statement. "I want to change that. I will work my heart out to earn the trust of the people of Massachusetts."

President Obama tapped Warren last year to set up a new consumer protection agency, and she was widely favored by Democrats to direct the resulting Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Congressional Republicans, however, opposed the move, and Warren returned to Massachusetts this summer, where she was heavily courted by the Democratic establishment in the state to jump into the race.

Warren has never run for elected political office, but many believe that her recent high-profile position in Washington - as well as her long history of consumer advocacy - could give her the necessary clout to run a successful campaign for the seat formerly occupied by liberal icon Ted Kennedy.
