Eli Manning: The best advice my dad Archie gave me
This Father's Day is going to be a special one, says Eli Manning.
The New York Giants quarterback's parents are in town for the occasion and his wife, Abby, and their three young daughters Ava, Lucy and Caroline will be joining for three generations of Mannings.
"I finally realized -- I thought my parents were coming to see me and visit, but I really think they're coming to see the grandchildren," he said, laughing. "We'll all just all be together, not a whole lot planned -- just a lot of spending quality time together."
Eli's dad, of course, is Archie Manning, legendary NFL quarterback and Football Hall of Famer, whose career included stints with the New Orleans Saints, the Houston Oilers and Minnesota Vikings.
While in town this week, Archie attended the Giants spring mini-camp training for the first time on Thursday in New Jersey to see Eli in action ahead of the upcoming season.
Father and son are teaming up with Gilette for Father's Day, serving as spokespeople for the Gillette Shave Club, a monthly customizable shave plan subscription, where guys can sign their dads up for about $5 per month. Eli says he's already signed his dad up for it.
"It's actually a gift he might use. That headband I got him last year, I haven't seen him wearing it any," he said with a chuckle.
Clean shaven or not, Eli is feeling positive about his performance and the Giants offense.
"I feel real good," he said. "We had our last practice today for the spring. We had a strong camp. I think we worked hard this off-season keeping my arm strong. And I've been working with some different coaches and getting drills and getting strong. I feel great with the new offense - our second year in the offense. I feel comfortable about this upcoming season."
Eli says that as a kid his father gave him lasting advice that he still uses on the field (and in life) to this day. "Growing up my dad talked about not doing anything half way. Whatever you commit to, go all out. Do it to your best. Don't start something and just because it gets, quit it in any way."
But now that Eli and his brother, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, are older and established, Archie takes back seat when it comes to advice-giving.
"I don't give them a lot of advice," Archie, 66, told CBSNews.com. "Every now and then they lean on me. Certainly not about X's and O's. I've never been their coach. And they've had great coaches through years. They'll give me a call every now and then, there's something going on...Just a situation. I'm glad...I love for them ask for advice or just to have that conversation and share it with them."
Looking head, Eli, 34, says he's excited to get the season started. First up? Four pre-season games before the regular season gets underway on Sept. 13 against the Dallas Cowboys.
"Right now I feel like I have the greatest job in the world," Eli said. "And there's nothing more that I'd rather be doing."
And as for his eventual retirement?
"I'm not going to start planning for something that I'm not looking forward to. I like playing football. I like what I do every day and I'm going to stay committed to it and stay focused on it. When I get done I'll figure out that next part of my life."
