East Cleveland Bodies Update: Michael Madison charged with aggravated murder, kidnapping; one victim ID'd

(CBS) EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio - A medical examiner in Ohio has identified one of the victims whose body was discovered in East Cleveland over the weekend, but is still working to identify the two other dead women, authorities said at a press conference Monday.

A suspect in the three deaths, Michael Madison, appeared in court Monday afternoon. He was charged with three counts of aggravated murder and three counts of kidnapping, and ordered held on $6 million bond - $1 million for each count.

Madison, wearing a purple prison jumpsuit, stared straight ahead and showed no emotion as a judge read the charges.

The body that has been identified is Angela Deskins, a Cleveland resident believed to be 38 years old, East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton said at the press conference.

Authorities responding to a report of a foul odor from a home ultimately discovered three bodies and arrested Madison, a registered sex offender. The odor led to the discovery Friday of one body in a garage. Two others were found Saturday - one in a backyard and the other in the basement of a vacant house.

The victims were found about 100 to 200 yards apart, and authorities believed they were killed in the past six to 10 days. The discovery sent police and volunteers through a poor Ohio neighborhood in a search for more victims Sunday, officials said.

"Fortunately, with the grace of God, there was not another victim found yesterday," Norton told reporters Monday.

Norton thanked community volunteers who aided in the search.

A medical examiner, Thomas Norton, said that victim Deskins was identified using fingerprints. Authorities were awaiting possible fingerprint matches from a larger database and using DNA and dental information in an attempt to identify the two other victims, Norton said.

Norton said identification could take up to several says. The bodies were "very decomposed," Norton said.

"We want to get it right, obviously," Norton said. "I think it's the worst news someone can get."

Norton described tattoos on the body of one of the victims that may aid in identifying her. The victim has a red star tattoo on the base of her left thumb; a tattoo of lips on her left forearm with the name "Gene;" a tattoo of a purple and green flower on her left thigh, also with the name "Gene;" and a tattoo on her left breast that read, "Lil Wayne," "spelled like the rapper."

East Cleveland Police Chief Ralph Spotts said the investigation was "nowhere near done."

Norton has said Madison has indicated he might have been influenced by Cleveland serial killer Anthony Sowell, who was convicted in 2011 of murdering 11 women and sentenced to death.
