Ducks' Kariya Gets Time Served
Paul Kariya of Anaheim Mighty Ducks, a two-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy as the most gentlemanly player in the NHL, was suspended for a game Wednesday for slashing Minnesota's Aaron Gavey in an exhibition game last week.
In making the announcement, the league also said the forward had served the suspension when he sat out Anaheim's exhibition game with Phoenix on Saturday. The Mighty Ducks open the season Friday night at home.
The suspension was the first in Kariya's six years in the league. He has averaged only 19 1/2 penalty minutes a season.
Kariya received a match penalty for the slash.
