Drunk driver killed pedestrian who landed in car, say Houston cops

James John Onak KHOU

(CBS/KHOU/AP) HOUSTON - An allegedly intoxicated Texas man accused of striking and killing a pedestrian in Houston Tuesday, and then driving several miles with the victim's body lodged in his car, has been charged with DWI and failure to stop and render aid.

Police say James John Onak, 49, struck and killed Fadel Steadman, 32, and kept going after the victim had crashed through the windshield and landed next to him in the passenger's seat, reports CBS affiliate KHOU.

According to Houston police, Steadman's car broke down in the emergency lane around 12:30 a.m. and he was running back and forth across the freeway when he was hit by Onak's vehicle.

Only when Onak was pulled over by police 10 minutes after the collision did he seem to realize what had happened.

Onak claimed he was aware he hit something, but not that a body was lying beside him, police said, according to KHOU.

Investigators say toxicology results are expected in the next few days.

According to the Harris County District Attorney's Office, the failure to stop and render aid charge is a felony that carries a potential punishment of two to 10 years in prison. The DWI charge carries up to six months behind bars.
