"Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes developing 1880s New York drama for NBC
"Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes is looking across the pond for the subject of his next project.
Fellowes has inked a deal with NBC to create, write and produce "The Gilded Age," a drama set in 1880s New York, the network announced Tuesday.
NBC described the series as "an epic tale of the princes of the American Renaissance, and the vast fortunes they made -- and spent -- in late nineteenth-century New York."
"This was a vivid time, with dizzying, brilliant ascents and calamitous falls, of record-breaking ostentation and savage rivalry; a time when money was king," Fellowes said of the project.
"We at the network are all so thrilled to be working with the immensely talented Julian Fellowes, who is universally admired for his critically and commercially appealing productions," NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke said in a statement. "Having him on our team represents a major creative coup and everyone is looking forward to his first NBC project in 'The Gilded Age.'"
Fellowes will also continue on in his role with "Downton Abbey," which was recently renewed for a fourth season. The third season will premiere in the U.S. on Jan. 6 on PBS.
