Douglas, Zeta-Jones Wed
Choosing old-fashioned glamour over privacy, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones were married in an extravagant wedding at The Plaza hotel on Central Park.
By early Saturday evening, several hundred people had gathered to watch the limousines arrive with celebrities including Martha Stewart, Art Garfunkel, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Christopher Reeve, and Barbara Walters.
Douglas and Zeta-Jones reportedly spent $2 million for the gala black tie affair inside the ballroom of the French Renaissance-style hotel, where Donald Trump and Marla Maples were also wed. Their guest list was a who's who of the celebrity world, including Sean Connery, Sharon Stone, Jack Nicholson, Steven Spielberg and Anthony Hopkins among the 350 expected to attend.
A night earlier, Douglas and Zeta-Jones presented the paparazzi with hors d'oeuvres during a rehearsal dinner for a reported 150 people at the Russian Tea Room.
As the pair arrived in a black limousine Friday, someone asked Douglas, 56, what he considered to be best about marrying Zeta-Jones, 31.
"You're looking at her," he replied.
Kirk Douglas, the father of the groom, gave his blessing. "I'd marry her myself, but my wife won't let me," the 83-year-old film star said.
Zeta-Jones reportedly flew in relatives from her hometown, Swansea, in Wales. Stores in the seaside corner of Swansea where Zeta-Jones was born and raised put out bunting and flags Saturday offering best wishes to the couple and sent a congratulatory fax to the Plaza.
The couple got engaged on New Year's Eve in Aspen, Colorado. She gave birth to their son, Dylan Michael Douglas, in August.
The New York Post reported that Douglas' older son, Cameron, who has been charged in New York with cocaine possession, would be his father's best man. The wedding is Douglas' second and Zeta-Jones' first.
