Donald Trump disappointed in John Kasich for not endorsing him
Donald Trump says he’s disappointed that Ohio Gov. John Kasich didn’t follow through on his pledge to back the GOP presidential nominee.
“You know, I’m disappointed that people signed a pledge and they signed it so I would sign it,” Trump said in a joint interview with GOP vice presidential nominee Indiana Gov. Mike Pence on Monday with ABC News’s David Muir.
Kasich has not formally endorsed Trump for president and he even steered clear of the Republican National Convention when his own state hosted it in Cleveland in July.
“I hold Gov. Kasich in high regard. Look, these two went through a tough competition together,” Pence told ABC. “I respect that, these things sometimes take time.”
Kasich was the last person out of more than a dozen GOP presidential candidates to drop out of the primary race in May. Throughout the primary cycle, Kasich blasted Trump and warned about his “path to darkness.”
But even as Trump criticizes Kasich for withholding an endorsement and reneging on the Republican pledge, Trump himself said in March that he was no longer committed to supporting the eventual GOP nominee.
“Do you continue to pledge whoever the Republican nominee is?” CNN’s Anderson Cooper asked Trump during a televised town hall in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Trump replied, “No. I don’t anymore.”
