Dog survives fall down 200-foot mine shaft in Colorado
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- A dog in Colorado took quite the fall, but somehow managed to survive.
Bailey, a 5-year-old pit bull from Colorado, was rescued by fire crews after falling approximately 200 feet down an old mine shaft, reports CBS Denver.
Eric Storrs, the dogs owner, said he was running with Bailey in an area he wasn't familiar with when she took off.
"She jumped over the top of a hill and disappeared," Storrs said.
After he lost sight of Bailey, he was pretty scared. That's when he discovered what had happened. Bailey had fallen down an old mine shaft.
"I didn't think there was any way looking down that hole that there was any chance she could survive," he told CBS Denver.
As rescuers were on the way, Storrs warned his children, Bailey might not make it.
But he was wrong.
Knowing he couldn't get Bailey out himself, he called for help. West Metro Fire crews responded in minutes.
The crew immediately sprung into action. Two rescuers were lowered into the mine. They were able to find Bailey and then bring her back to safety.
The entire rescue was captured on camera, including Storrs' emotional reunion with Bailey.
"She popped her head out and she was sitting in that basket it was amazing," Storrs recalled to CBS Denver. "They said they were going to pull my dog out and they pulled her out."
Bailey walked away with just a few cuts and minor scrapes.
