Disney developing live-action "Mulan" film
Disney has set its next animated classic to get the live-action treatment: "Mulan."
The studio has bought a script for a retelling of the 1998 film that centers on the Chinese legend of female warrior Hua Mulan, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In the original animated version, a young woman disguises herself as a man so she can take her father's place in the army and go to war. Ming-Na Wen provided the voice of the titular heroine (with Lea Salonga providing her singing voice), while Eddie Murphy was the voice of her trusty dragon sidekick, Mushu.
No release date or casting news has yet been announced, but the in-development project joins a list of live-action remakes of beloved Disney tales. "Cinderella," starring Lily James, Cate Blanchett and Richard Madden, debuted at No. 1 at the box office earlier this month and has so far earned more than $300 million worldwide.
Last year, Angelina Jolie also took on the title role in "Maleficent," a live-action retelling of "Sleeping Beauty" that made made $758.4 million at the global box office.
Disney is also planning a live-action version of "Beauty and the Beast" starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, slated for 2017, a new version of "The Jungle Book" and a sequel to 2010's live-action retelling of "Alice in Wonderland."
