Did 8th graders commit criminal sexting?
BARRINGTON, Ill. - A sexting scandal involving provocative and naked photos of eighth-graders has erupted in the affluent village of Barrington, in northwest Illinois, reports CBS Chicago.
A small group of students at Barrington Middle School-Station Campus have been taking inappropriate photos with their camera phones and sharing the pictures with each other, the school confirmed, according to the station.
"Kids will be kids, but it crosses the line, when it involves sexting," parent Chris Mitchell told the station.
School officials reportedly found out about the problem last week.
"We have also spoken to every single student and parent of that small group that was involved directly, to make sure that we talked about that we believed those images were on their personal devices and making sure they were deleted," Craig Winkelman, principal of the school, said, according to CBS Chicago.
Winkelman reportedly sent a note home to parents to notify them of the situation Monday afternoon. He says the school teaches students about "the do's and don'ts" of texts and social networks.
The principal says all affected students and their families are cooperating as police investigate the matter. Criminal charges could be filed, reports the station.
